View On GoogleBenefits of Early Removal
There are many important benefits that come with choosing to have wisdom teeth removed before they become a problem, including:
Fewer Complications
Complications related to the procedure (like delayed healing or infections) are increased if an impacted wisdom tooth is surgically removed in your thirties, forties, or beyond. Wisdom teeth are usually removed at an early age, when their tooth roots are shorter and your jaw bone is thinner. As you grow older, the roots grow deeper and your jawbone thickens, making removal more difficult.
Save Money
Leaving your wisdom teeth now can result in additional costs in the future. If your wisdom teeth become problematic, you may have to pay for more complicated and expensive treatment, and orthodontics to correct misalignment and damage to existing teeth.

View On GoogleSigns Your Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed
Inflammation
As your third molars (wisdom teeth) erupt, swelling and pain can accompany their arrival. The gums and surrounding soft tissue may appear inflamed and red.
Jaw Pain
When your other teeth in your mouth are being disrupted by wisdom teeth, you can expect pronounced discomfort.
Sinus Pain
You may also experience sinus pain resulting from your upper wisdom teeth erupting. Congestion, headaches, and sinus pressure are all signs that you may need extraction.
Bad Breath
Impacted teeth can cause decay and infections in your mouth. If you have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, it may be caused by an infection from an impacted wisdom tooth.
Cavities
The wisdom teeth are hard to properly clean, which can easily result in cavities.
Shifting Teeth
If you've noticed that your bite is misaligned, it may be because your wisdom teeth are pushing your surrounding teeth out of place as they make their way into your smile.
Notice Any of These Symptoms? Request a Consultation
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's a good idea to consult with a trusted oral surgeon. Dr. Newey uses 3D imaging technology to get a full view of your bite and assess how your wisdom teeth are developing. Based on this analysis, he can determine if an extraction procedure is right for you. Call to request a consultation at:

What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars at the back of your mouth. They typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Oral health problems can occur with the growth of wisdom teeth because they can cause other teeth to shift out of place or become damaged. Other issues include pain, inflammation, and sinus issues. When there's not enough room at the back of the mouth for wisdom teeth to emerge, the tooth is considered impacted.

Standing teeth may be pushed out of alignment by wisdom teeth, resulting in a misaligned bite, crooked teeth, TMJ, or other more serious dental problems.
Removing an impacted wisdom tooth right away is essential to protecting your oral health and the aesthetics of your smile. You can also elect to have developing wisdom teeth removed as a preventive measure.
Types of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
It's important not to ignore an impacted tooth, as it can cause problems like infections, damage to surrounding teeth, and cysts. There are four types of impacted wisdom teeth:

Angular
Wisdom teeth can erupt at an angle, impacting the nearest molar and forcing the adjacent teeth into misalignment. Misalignment can result in further oral health problems, like TMJ, that may require more extensive solutions to fix the problem.

Partial Eruption
A partially erupted wisdom tooth may break through the gums, but will not have enough room to erupt past the surface entirely.

Horizontal
Your impacted tooth may come in completely sideways, lying horizontally under your gums. The impacted tooth is pushing directly on the adjacent tooth.

Vertical
Unlike the other types of impacted wisdom teeth, vertically impacted wisdom teeth are in the correct vertical position but trapped under the gums. This type of impaction may not require extraction unless it is crowding surrounding teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal
Dr. Newey informs his patients during their consultation of what to expect after surgery. Until you are able to meet him, here are a few answers to frequently asked questions:
At what age should wisdom teeth be extracted?
It's a good idea to have your wisdom teeth extracted when you are young. Your jawbone and the roots of your wisdom teeth aren't fully formed, making extraction simpler. Recovery is also faster at a younger age.
What will I experience the first few days after surgery?
Probably some minor bleeding, soreness, and swelling in the surgical areas. Gently biting down on gauze, applying ice packs, and taking pain medications like ibuprofen should help reduce the swelling and uncomfortable symptoms. Dr. Newey may prescribe pain meds and antibiotics to control pain and prevent infection.
Can I eat normally?
Stick to soft or liquid foods for a few days, like warm (not hot) soups, smoothies, and mashed potatoes. Hard, crunchy foods could cause pain, dislodge the protective blood clot, or open your sutures while you chew. Make sure to not drink through a straw, as this can disrupt the sutures or dislodge the blood clot.
Can I brush my teeth?
Yes. It is important to keep up your normal oral hygiene routine. However, it is best to avoid brushing or flossing in the extraction areas for about a week. This could disrupt the sutures or blot clots, which could create a condition called dry socket. A dry socket can lead to infection and increased pain.
Any other recovery tips?
Gently rinse with warm salt water to keep your extraction sites clean. You must also refrain from smoking, as that can slow down the healing process. It can take a few months for the extraction sites to heal completely.
