What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars at the back of your mouth. They typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Oral health problems can occur with the growth of wisdom teeth because they can cause other teeth to shift out of place or become damaged. Other issues include pain, inflammation, and sinus issues. When there's not enough room at the back of the mouth for wisdom teeth to emerge, the tooth is considered impacted.

woman with jaw pain
Standing teeth may be pushed out of alignment by wisdom teeth, resulting in a misaligned bite, crooked teeth, TMJ, or other more serious dental problems.

Removing an impacted wisdom tooth right away is essential to protecting your oral health and the aesthetics of your smile. You can also elect to have developing wisdom teeth removed as a preventive measure.

Types of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

It's important not to ignore an impacted tooth, as it can cause problems like infections, damage to surrounding teeth, and cysts. There are four types of impacted wisdom teeth:
angular impaction

Angular

Wisdom teeth can erupt at an angle, impacting the nearest molar and forcing the adjacent teeth into misalignment. Misalignment can result in further oral health problems, like TMJ, that may require more extensive solutions to fix the problem.

Partial Eruption

Partial Eruption

A partially erupted wisdom tooth may break through the gums, but will not have enough room to erupt past the surface entirely.

Horizontal impaction

Horizontal

Your impacted tooth may come in completely sideways, lying horizontally under your gums. The impacted tooth is pushing directly on the adjacent tooth.

Vertical impaction

Vertical

Unlike the other types of impacted wisdom teeth, vertically impacted wisdom teeth are in the correct vertical position but trapped under the gums. This type of impaction may not require extraction unless it is crowding surrounding teeth.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed

Inflammation

As your third molars (wisdom teeth) erupt, swelling and pain can accompany their arrival. The gums and surrounding soft tissue may appear inflamed and red.

Jaw Pain

When your other teeth in your mouth are being disrupted by wisdom teeth, you can expect pronounced discomfort.

Sinus Pain

You may also experience sinus pain resulting from your upper wisdom teeth erupting. Congestion, headaches, and sinus pressure are all signs that you may need extraction.

Bad Breath

Impacted teeth can cause decay and infections in your mouth. If you have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, it may be caused by an infection from an impacted wisdom tooth.

Cavities

The wisdom teeth are hard to properly clean, which can easily result in cavities.

Shifting Teeth

If you've noticed that your bite is misaligned, it may be because your wisdom teeth are pushing your surrounding teeth out of place as they make their way into your smile.

Notice Any of These Symptoms? Request a Consultation

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's a good idea to consult with a trusted oral surgeon. Dr. Newey uses 3D imaging technology to get a full view of your bite and assess how your wisdom teeth are developing. Based on this analysis, he can determine if an extraction procedure is right for you. Call to request a consultation at:

Dr Newey removed my sons wisdom teeth. It was fast and painless. He also did surgery on my young daughters mouth. Once my daughter was sedated Dr Newey noticed a problem that would affect her later in life...We decided it would be best for him to do the procedure that day. He was able to save us time and money...100% would recommend Dr Newey!

Benefits of Early Removal

There are many important benefits that come with choosing to have wisdom teeth removed before they become a problem, including:

Fewer Complications

Complications related to the procedure (like delayed healing or infections) are increased if an impacted wisdom tooth is surgically removed in your thirties, forties, or beyond. Wisdom teeth are usually removed at an early age, when their tooth roots are shorter and your jaw bone is thinner. As you grow older, the roots grow deeper and your jawbone thickens, making removal more difficult.

Save Money

Leaving your wisdom teeth now can result in additional costs in the future. If your wisdom teeth become problematic, you may have to pay for more complicated and expensive treatment, and orthodontics to correct misalignment and damage to existing teeth.

Prevent Dental Health Problems Contact Dr. Newey for an Exam Today

If you are in your late teens or early twenties, scheduling regular oral exams with Dr. Newey at his Clearfield, UT, practice can determine if your wisdom teeth are on track to cause dental problems. We are happy to take referrals or evaluate symptoms related to wisdom teeth, including jaw pain. Even if you are not currently suffering any symptoms of complications, early removal of your third molars now can save you time and money later, while also helping you avoid serious discomfort and other issues.

Nothing but good things to say! I had been experiencing major wisdom tooth pain since mid-July and struggled with finding a good surgeon to extract the teeth. Places either wanted $1000+ upfront or didn't tell me I was out of network until the day of my appointment. Dr. Newey's office was the third place I had tried over the course of about two months, and they were able to get me in quickly for a consultation, and less than a week later I was able to get my wisdom teeth extracted. The office is nice, and the staff is even better. Several days after getting the teeth extracted I was still in a lot of pain, and someone in the office even stayed after the office closed for me to pick up another prescription as she didn't want me in the pain over the weekend. Definitely recommend Dr. Newey's office!

I needed to be seen on an emergency basis and the staff were able to squeeze me in that same day within just a few minutes!! I needed two molars extracted, was experiencing a ton of pain, and was a nervous wreck!! Dr. Newey and his staff put me right at ease, and very quickly out of pain with some numbing shots. One of my teeth had broke off and I thought for sure that pulling would turn into a nightmare; however, Dr. Newey had both molars out in under 10 minutes! My roots were HUGE...this man knows what he's doing!!!

Does Age Matter?

/

It's a good idea to have your wisdom teeth extracted when you are young. Your jawbone and the roots of your wisdom teeth aren't fully formed, making extraction simpler. Recovery is also faster at a younger age.

A Closer Look at How Wisdom Teeth Can Affect Your Smile

This animation illustrates the effect that wisdom teeth can have on the alignment of your smile. Preventive wisdom tooth extraction can help you avoid this and other issues

Step-by-Step Process of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Thanks to sedation, you may not even remember the surgery, and you can expect virtually no discomfort during treatment.

Day of Procedure

Thanks to sedation, you may not even remember the surgery, and you can expect virtually no discomfort during treatment.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Newey and his team will take x-rays of your teeth to prepare a plan for extraction. These x-rays will let him know the state of your wisdom teeth and the best approach to removing them.

Anesthesia

Dr. Newey uses a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. He can also provide sedation upon request. After you have been made comfortable, Dr. Newey will begin the procedure.

Incision and Extraction

If necessary, Dr. Newey will make precise incisions to access the wisdom teeth. He will use specialized tools to gently extract each tooth from your jawbone in a way that causes minimal disruption of healthy tissue.

Sutures

After the wisdom teeth are removed, your incisions will be sutured closed. Dr. Newey will place gauze on the incision areas to help stop bleeding. The gauze will also help the formation of blood clots, which will help seal the wound.

Go Home to Rest

If you receive sedation, you should have a friend or family member drive you home. In either case, plan to go home and rest for the remainder of the day.

Do I Qualify for Sedation? Candidate Factors

Sedation can be a massive help for calming a patient's nerves and providing a virtually painless experience. Our Clearfield, UT, practice will make sure you meet this and other criteria before recommending sedation or general anesthesia:

  • You are in generally good health
  • You are not pregnant
  • You don't have a history of adverse reactions to the medications
We also want our patients to understand that our measures to ensure your comfort don't stop with sedation and anesthesia. If there is anything at all we can do to help you feel more comfortable under our care, please let us know. Our practice encourages every patient to be frank with us when it comes to explaining how we can make your experience with us the best it can be.

Nervous About the Procedure? Discuss Sedation During Your Consultation

One of the major factors holding patients back from removing their wisdom teeth sooner is the fear of pain. At the Oral & Facial Surgery Center in Clearfield, UT, local anesthesia numbs the treatment area within the mouth to make the procedure virtually painless. We also can administer IV sedation, general anesthesia, or nitrous oxide. Dr. Newey is an oral surgeon who prioritizes comfort and safety for patients throughout any procedure. We would be glad to have a discussion with you about how sedation and anesthesia can benefit you during a consultation at our Clearfield, UT, office. Give us a call today:

Recovering From Wisdom Tooth Removal Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Newey informs his patients during their consultation of what to expect after surgery. Until you are able to meet him, here are a few answers to frequently asked questions:

What will I experience over the next few days?

Probably some minor bleeding, soreness, and swelling in the surgical areas. Gently biting down on gauze, applying ice packs, and taking pain medications like ibuprofen should help reduce the swelling and uncomfortable symptoms. Dr. Newey may prescribe pain meds and antibiotics to control pain and prevent infection.

Can I eat normally?

Stick to soft or liquid foods for a few days, like warm (not hot) soups, smoothies, and mashed potatoes. Hard, crunchy foods could cause pain, dislodge the protective blood clot, or open your sutures while you chew. Make sure to not drink through a straw, as this can disrupt the sutures or dislodge the blood clot.

Can I brush my teeth?

Yes. It is important to keep up your normal oral hygiene routine. However, it is best to avoid brushing or flossing in the extraction areas for about a week. This could disrupt the sutures or blot clots, which could create a condition called dry socket. A dry socket can lead to infection and increased pain.

Any other recovery tips?

Gently rinse with warm salt water to keep your extraction sites clean. You must also refrain from smoking, as that can slow down the healing process. It can take a few months for the extraction sites to heal completely.
