Jaw Surgery

Do you have a protruding upper jaw, an underdeveloped lower jaw, or misaligned jaws that impact your daily life?

Jaw surgery can effectively reposition your jaws to improve your dental function and facial appearance.

The Oral & Facial Surgery Center in Clearfield, UT, can work alongside your dentist and orthodontist for thorough, streamlined treatment.

Jaw Surgery Can Change Your Life

Orthognathic surgery is needed when the upper jaw (maxilla) and lower jaw (mandible) don’t meet correctly and/or teeth don’t adequately fit within the jaw. Orthognathic surgery is a process that includes orthodontics, jaw surgery, recovery after jaw surgery, and further orthodontic treatment. The process can take two to three years, but offers many benefits:

Restored Oral Function

Jaw surgery and orthodontics allow the teeth to meet correctly and function properly. They can correct an open bite, crossbite, and underbite. Following treatment, patients can expect to chew in comfort, swallow with ease, and speak with clarity. They may even be able to breathe easier following surgery.

Improved Sleep Quality

Obstructive sleep apnea can occur when your airway is blocked by the muscles, tonsils, tongue, or excessive tissues at the back of the throat. The condition causes fitful sleep that can impact your health and ability to focus during the day. Maxillomandibular advancement is a kind of jaw surgery that can treat obstructive sleep apnea to improve your quality of life.

Enhanced Facial Appearance

When teeth are straightened with orthodontics and corrective jaw surgery repositions your misaligned, protruding, or underdeveloped jaw, you may feel more confident. The process can correct an underbite, crossbite, open bite, and more, giving you a beautiful smile and allowing your lips to close comfortably.

Reduced Facial Pain

An improper bite can lead to TMJ disorders that cause jaw pain, headaches, and more. The orthognathic surgery process can realign your teeth to alleviate the symptoms associated with TMJ disorders.

Are Finished Developing

Patients should be finished developing before considering corrective jaw surgery. Females can be candidates between the ages of 14 and 16 and males can be candidates between the ages of 17 and 21.

Have a Jaw Problem

Jaws that are positioned incorrectly can be the result of genetics, a birth defect, a medical condition, or trauma to the jaw. While orthodontics can sometimes be enough to correct bite problems, orthognathic surgery may be required when the repositioning of the jaws, in addition to the teeth, is necessary.

Are Committed to the Process

Patients should understand the limitations of maxillofacial surgery, and have a realistic idea of what it can do for them. They should also be committed to the process, as it requires a liquid diet after the procedure and can take two to three years to complete.

Preparation

Dr. Newey may take X-rays, scans, impressions, and photographs of your teeth and jaw to plan a treatment that works for you. He will work alongside your dentist and orthodontist for treatment that is tailored to your needs.

Orthodontics

Your mouth and teeth will need to be prepared for your new jaw positioning and alignmen. This may require the removal of some teeth and the placement of braces. You may have to wear your braces for a year prior to your jaw surgery.

Jaw Surgery

Dr. Newey will perform your jaw surgery in a local hospital. The procedure typically takes about four hours. During this time, you will be placed under general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Dr. Newey will divide the jawbone and move it into the correct position. Bone from a donor site may be added, if necessary. The jawbone is then secured in place. The procedure can typically be completed inside the mouth, so you likely won't have to worry about facial scarring.

Recovery

You may be required to stay in the hospital for up to four days while healthcare professionals monitor your progress, however, many patients can go home on the same day. You will need to recover at home for up to one month before returning to work or school. It could take up to two months for normal chewing function to be restored and up to a year before your jaw heals completely.

Follow-Up Visits

Though the frequency of follow-up visits is different for every patient, you may be required to meet with Dr. Newey in Clearfield, UT, at the two-week, one-month, and six-month marks so he can ensure that you're healing properly.

Orthodontics

You may be required to wear orthodontics for up to a year after your surgery. Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, you will need a retainer to keep your teeth in their aligned position.

Paying for Your Corrective Jaw Surgery

Misaligned jaws can result in oral health problems and future medical and dental complications. Because of this, many insurances will help cover the cost of corrective jaw surgery. The Oral & Facial Surgery Center in Clearfield, UT, accepts most insurances so this procedure is within reach. We are happy to check with your dental and medical insurance providers to determine your coverage.

If you have any out-of-pocket costs, you can finance your treatment through CareCredit®, a third-party lender which allows patients to pay for their care in affordable monthly installments.
